Report 04 / The League

Philo's customers
do the math out loud.

538 unprompted posts and comments about Philo read like an audit: price changes tracked to the dollar, channel adds weighed against the bill, cancellations the moment the math stops working. Price isn't a message to this audience. It's the deal they signed, and they enforce it.

That's the rational floor under the emotional campaign, and also its limit. Value talk is table stakes in this category; every brand's customers argue price (Finding 5.2). These threads show what a relationship built only on the math sounds like. The League gives people a second reason to stay.

Finding 4.2

Price gravity is category-wide

Share of each brand's customer threads that talk price. Customers are price-aware everywhere in this category, which is why the emotional layer is the differentiator, not another price claim.

Very true. So previously, Philo had given me a "perk" for being a long time legacy customer. So now they just treat me like a brand new customer, and no longer any addition perk or reward for my many years of loyalty. My plan should now be $22 bucks!!5
This change is almost certainly from competitive pressure they are feeling from DTV's genre packs.3
Cancelled Philo after almost 10 years.

I had it from almost day one, and still do. It's still a better value than anything else out there.19
Half of the channels they added are amateur YouTuber quality programs. Anything that was studio quality channel was reruns of Ridiculousness, First 48 or Kindred Spirits. Not entirely Philo's fault but when prices go up and value goes down, that's when I pull the plug.8
Philo Legacy Plan Price Increase

Yep. The only reason I've kept it for so long is because of the $16 a month pricing. It's not worth keeping with a 56% price increase. 10
It's probably good for me. I only use Philo a few times a year. I was only hanging on to it for the $16 a month price tag. A 56% price increase isn't worth keeping it. 8

I get the Outlaw channel OTA. But Outlaw on Philo has completely different programming. Why? I was hoping to have some of the OTA content on demand.1
There could still be differences, but keep in mind that Philo could be operating on a difference time zone than your local.1

This kind of forced bundling is what drove me away from cable and to Philo. If I wanted HBO Max I'd already have it, but I don't, so you just increased my monthly bill by almost 20% with no benefit to me. You just made YouTube TV look a lot more appealing than it did yesterday.14
It's a $5 price increase for everyone outside of legacy accounts. Nice headline though lol.8
It just wouldn't be a Philo app update without them breaking something!

Third thing is factory reset your device. :D2
Have you tried rebooting your device? I had that issue, but it went away when I rebooted.1

Totally agree. But just getting Acorn Mysteries is a huge get!2
It's like having a paid Acorn TV subscription! Btw, Philo offered a feature a few months ago. If you opted in, you don't even need to "save" shows anymore. Everything just records automatically in the background.2

wait? We're still on the $25 month and we've had Philo quite a while... at least several years. We never got moved to a more $$ plan.5
Look online on your account sign in. Or look at the app on your phone follow up. It’ll tell you there.1

The announcement omits the addition of MeTV WEST to the Core Service Package! Awesome addition! 🤠2

Worth sitting with: even the "cancelled after 10 years" thread's top reply is "it's still a better value than anything else out there." The value story survives its own complaint section. It just can't be the whole relationship, and that gap is what the campaign fills.
