Fandom is
a league.
The sport just isn't the one you think. We classified how reality-TV fans actually speak. They don't sound like spectators, and they don't coach from the stands. They sound like a jury.
This is not a deck of borrowed syndicated stats. We collected everything ourselves: every competitor's advertising, six fan communities' conversations, the franchise calendar. Then we let the numbers speak, including where they pushed back on our own creative instincts.
Reality fans really are sports fans. Their sport is judging people. And nobody has ever made them the hero.
Four findings, four moves. Everything below this section is the evidence.
We classified 3,012 fan comments by how they speak.
One stance towers over every control.
In the biggest fandoms, up to 25% of everything fans say is a verdict: guilt, receipts, who was right. The structure of fandom is a league, with seasons, allegiances and appointment viewing. But its native language is judgment, not box scores. We measured how each comment speaks rather than which words it uses, so "guilty pleasure" never counts as a verdict, and every sample was labeled twice to check reliability.
